Abstract

Adolescence is a critical developmental stage marked by rapid cognitive, emotional, and social changes. During this period, academic expectations often intensify, shaping self-identity and future aspirations. While educational achievement can promote personal growth and opportunity, excessive academic pressure has been increasingly linked to adverse mental health outcomes among adolescents. Competitive school environments, high parental expectations, examination stress, and constant performance evaluation contribute to heightened anxiety, depressive symptoms, sleep disturbances, and reduced self-esteem. In many education systems, standardized testing and merit-based advancement create performance-driven cultures that amplify stress. Adolescents may internalize academic success as a primary measure of self-worth, leading to fear of failure and chronic worry. The World Health Organization recognizes adolescence as a vulnerable period for the onset of mental health disorders, with stress-related factors playing a significant role.
