The Third Generation of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and the Modernisation of Psychotherapy
Keywords:
Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.Abstract
This research focuses on the 'third wave' of cognitive behavioural therapies, which emerged at the beginning of the new millennium in response to the philosophical and empirical limitations of the first two waves. This approach emphasises the contextual dimension of human experience through concepts such as acceptance, mindfulness and psychological flexibility. Three principal therapeutic models belonging to this wave are presented: Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), which aims to prevent depressive relapse; Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), which focuses on regulating emotions and improving interpersonal relationships; and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which helps individuals to accept difficult experiences and commit to positive values. Studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of these programmes in alleviating the symptoms of depression, anxiety and personality disorders. This establishes them as one of the most significant contemporary trends in psychotherapy.
