Abstract

This study aims to explore the role of art therapy in developing social skills among children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This therapeutic approach is grounded in the premise that art serves as an alternative means of communication, enabling children with ASD to overcome language barriers, which constitute one of the most significant challenges they face. Children with ASD exhibit marked deficits in a wide range of social skills, including impaired verbal communication, stereotyped behaviors, difficulty interpreting gestures and facial expressions, limited reciprocal interaction, and deficiencies in establishing and maintaining social relationships.

Through a comprehensive review and analysis of previous literature, the present study highlights the contribution of art therapy to the enhancement of these social skills. Art provides a safe and alternative channel for communication that does not rely exclusively on verbal language or symbolic expression. It also creates interactive situations that encourage children with ASD to develop social relationships, reduce psychological stress, and increase their motivation to participate in social activities. Furthermore, art therapy contributes to alleviating social isolation and facilitates children's integration into collaborative artistic groups.

Accordingly, the study recommends incorporating art therapy into therapeutic interventions designed for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
